Car fire creates backup on Highway 24 in Oakland

A car fire on eastbound Highway 24 in Oakland near Broadway blocked all lanes of traffic early Friday morning, causing a mile-long backup.

According to media reports the car was fully engulfed in flames.

Firefighters responded to the scene and doused the fire. The right lane remained blocked as of 9 a.m.

Motorists were advised to expect delays and to use alternate routes to avoid the area.

There was no estimated time to the full reopening of the roadway as the morning commute wound down.
