If Draymond Green has seemed more controlled on the court lately, it’s because he’s making a concerted effort to be, well, a little less Draymond-y.
The Warriors star, infamous across the league for his emotional personality, is trying to tone things down after noticing some of the habits his young son was picking up.
“He plays on his little hoop, and then he’ll stomp around. I like the intensity, but slow down,” Green said at Sunday’s media availability. “I realize, like, how impressionable the kids are at the ages they’re at. I just really want to be a good example to them and show them the right thing.”
Green’s son, Draymond Junior, is just two and a half years old, so it didn’t take him long to adopt some of dad’s mannerisms.
“My son was shooting and flopping,” Green smiled. “I said, ‘You gotta stop watching the NBA.'”
“I want to make sure I’m setting a good example,” he added.
Admittedly, Green has a long way to go to shake his reputation as one of the NBA’s most-disliked players. His loud personality and penchant for trash-talking may have contributed to his being named “most overrated” by an anonymous poll of current NBA players.
“We’re the most hated team in sports,” teammate DeMarcus Cousins told ESPN in January. “They hate Kevin [Durant], they hate me. The only guy they really like is Steph [Curry]. They may hate him as well. They hate Draymond. I mean, it is what it is.”
Reputation aside, Green showed his supportive side during the Warriors’110-99 win over the Trail Blazers on Saturday night. When teammate Jordan Bell whiffed on a dunk, microphones caught Green reassuring him.
“Did he miss a shot tonight? Did he?” Green said, pointing to other players on the court. “I did, and he did too. It’s OK. Keep it moving. It’s OK. You missed a shot. All of us have. Nobody’s perfect.”
The Warriors look to clinch the Western Conference Finals in Game 4 on Monday against the Trail Blazers. Tipoff in Portland is at 6 p.m.
