A few hours after the NBA Finals match up of the Golden State Warriors vs. Toronto Raptors was set, legendary Bay Area rapper — and Warriors superfan — E-40 took to Instagram to post a photo of himself at a basketball game with another rapper who loves the opposing team: Drake.
In the photo, Drake is leaning on E-40, winking at the camera, while basketball fans are in the background try to snap photos of the rappers taking a selfie.
“SO IT BEGINS! @warriors vs @raptors @e40 vs @champagnepapi #e40vsDrake #nbafinals #frontrow40,” E-40 posted to Instagram along with the photo. He also posted similar messages on Facebook and Twitter.
A few hours later, Drake commented on E-40’s post, writing “We’re here waiting,” along with purple devil, check mark, and Canadian flag emojis. The Raptors have home court advantage in the match up.
The Raptors clinched the Eastern Conference Finals on Sunday by beating the Milwaukee Bucks 100-94. Drake was in the front row at the game and could be seen in several shots of the game, cheering, staring down players from Bucks, and trying to get the crowd hyped up.
Both E-40 and Drake are legends where they come from, known for helping to put their hometowns on the map, as far as rap is concerned. But they are also both known for regularly sitting in the front row of games for the Warriors and Raptors, respectively, and interacting with the team as more than passive spectators.
E-40 told The Undefeated in 2016 that he thought the Warriors would win 10 NBA championships and earlier this year he shared his favorite Warriors moments with GQ. He’s been featured on Stephen Curry’s web series “5 Minutes from Home.” He even made a Warriors remix to his hit song “Choices.”
And Drake is infamous for his sideline antics at Raptors games. Most recently, he caused controversy for massaging the shoulders of Raptors coach Nick Nurse during Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Finals — which is one of the most Drake ways to cause controversy.
E-40’s posts about the impending duel garnered lots of reaction across social media platforms. Retired NFL player and ESPN commentator Marcellus Wiley commented on his Instagram post that the Warriors would win the series in five games. Many of the immediate reactions to his post on Facebook and Twitter championed the Vallejo rapper as the better of the two.
And E-40 isn’t the only member of Dub Nation to take a shot at Drake over the Warriors-Raptors series. Warriors forward Draymond Green derided Drake for his basketball skills during the Dubs’ series against the Portland Trail Blazers.
The Warriors travel to Toronto to take on the Raptors in Game 1 on the 2019 NBA Finals on May 30.
