East Bay liquor store made someone $900,000 richer last night after lottery win

A liquor store in a San Leandro strip mall made someone a near-millionaire Tuesday night.

Mel’s Liquors, at 985 Manor Blvd., sold a winning Mega Millions lottery ticket that left one anonymous person $994,625 richer, a California Lottery official said.

The winner selected all five Mega Millions regular numbers — 4, 24, 22, 43, 58 — the only person in California to do so. He or she was just one number away from taking home $57 million.

The identity of the winner was not announced — and may never be revealed, even when he or she picks up the winnings.

Mel’s has sold lucky tickets before. Last year, someone won over $300,000 after purchasing a Mega Millions ticket at the store.

There is some hope for yesterday’s losers: The California Lottery’s Powerball jackpot is up to $750 million. Numbers will be drawn Wednesday night.
