Houston Rockets guard James Harden arrived at Oracle Arena for Game 1 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Golden State Warriors looking like a bandana quilt someone at a 4-H club stitched together. And basketball fans took to Twitter to roast him for it.
“James Harden with a very colorful outfit before the Rockets-Warriors game,” reads a tweet from ESPN along with a photo of him entering Oracle Arena.
“He cool with all the gangs,” wrote Twitter user @latjorrtot in the first response to ESPN’s tweet, referencing the R&B band Kool and the Gang and street gang culture.
Another Twitter user, @PKjensenAZ, joked that Harden is “affiliated with the BloodyCrippinIrishMobbinKardashianIlluminati Gang Gang” in the next comment. They weren’t the only basketball fans to have some fun at the expense of Harden’s fashion sense.
A few people compared Harden to a clown because of his vibrant getup. “Is the circus at Golden State today? Harden is dressed like a clown,” wrote @michael42388118.
One basketball fan wrote that he “looks like Craig Sager reincarnated,” in reference to the legendary basketball broadcaster known for his outlandish suits.
There were several comparisons to grandma attire, too, in response to the photo of Harden. “I remember my grandmother buying one of those at a flea market in 1984,” wrote Twitter user @CyrusPapyrus1. Another person the ensemble to a “grandma quilt.”
He’s hardly the first person in the NBA universe to try to make a bandana-patterned outfit happened, as Twitter user @Lilwillzee pointed out. “Harden receives scraps from Drake, makes shirt,” he wrote along with a photo of the Canadian rapper grinning, wearing a blue bandana button-up.
And even Harden fans took exception to his wardrobe choice. “Sorry, love James Harden, but he really needs a fashion adviser unless he’s wearing these awful outfits just to annoy people,” @LLavandedusud wrote.
