Flames leapfrog Sharks, regain top spot in Pacific Division

Matthew Tkachuk recorded his first career hat trick and added an assist to lead the host Flames to a 6-3 win over Vegas on Sunday and back into first place in the Pacific Division.

Mikael Backlund added two goals and an assist as the Flames snapped a four-game skid to move one point ahead of the Sharks — who had taken the division lead Saturday.

Playing alongside Tkachuk and Backlund, right wing Michael Frolik had four assists as the line combined for 11 points. Andrew Mangiapane also scored for Calgary, which ended Vegas’ six-game winning streak.

Backlund redirected Rasmus Andersson’s point shot past goalie Malcolm Subban with 21.8 seconds remaining before in the second period for a power-play goal that put Calgary ahead 4-3.

Tkachuk then one-timed a pass from Backlund past Subban at 15:43 of the third period before completing his hat trick with an empty-net goal.

Penguins 4, Bruins 2: Jared McCann scored twice and Matt Murray made 39 saves as host Pittsburgh beat Boston, which was 15-0-4 in its previous 19 games — the franchise’s longest point streak since 1940-41. Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk left the game after his right arm was pinned against the boards when he was hit by Pittsburgh’s Patric Hornqvist.

Capitals 3, Jets 1: Carl Hagelin came out of the penalty box to score the go-ahead goal on a breakaway and Pheonix Copley made 33 saves as host Washington won its seventh game in a row.

Panthers 6, Red Wings 1: Aleksander Barkov scored in the third period to reach 30 goals for the first time in his career as host Florida earned its second straight win.

Kings 3, Ducks 2: Carl Grundstrom scored his second NHL goal in his second career game as visiting Los Angeles won for the second time in 15 games.

Discipline: Philadelphia forward Jakub Voracek was suspended for two games for a hit Saturday that left Islanders forward Johnny Boychuk in concussion protocol. … Buffalo forward Jack Eichel was suspended for two games for a check to the head of Colorado forward Carl Soderberg on Saturday.
