Star wide receivers Antonio Brown and Odell Beckham Jr. were both traded away to new teams this offseason, and despite being publicly linked to both, the San Francisco 49ers came away with neither.
During a Friday morning appearance on KNBR’s “Murph & Mac Show,” general manager John Lynch said the 49ers—who have an ostensible need at wide receiver—were in on Beckham, but were never seriously interested in Brown.
“On Odell we were very much in that, we had been in it,” Lynch said. “I think ironically the fact that we had the No. 2 [overall pick in next month’s NFL Draft] made it more difficult because they wanted that badly. They wanted two No. 1s and we weren’t willing to part with that, that’s too valuable of a pick, even for a player of his magnitude. So we tried to come up with creative different ways to get it done and it didn’t work out so you move on.”

Beckham was ultimately traded to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for a first-round pick, a third-round pick and safety Jabrill Peppers.
“On Antonio we took a quick look and then we just said ‘Hey, you know, we’re not interested in that for our team,'” Lynch said.
Brown (sort of) got his wish to play in the Bay Area, as he was traded to the Oakland Raiders for a third-round pick and a fifth-round pick.
Lynch said the team feels pretty good about its depth chart at the position.
“I think we feel pretty good about our receiving corps,” he said. “I know a lot of people don’t share our sentiment. That’s not to say we’re done there. We still have a lot of this offseason left, we have a draft left, but we feel good about that and we want to continue to improve it.”
The 49ers GM also discussed the acquisitions of Dee Ford, Kwon Alexander and Tevin Coleman as well as preparation for next month’s NFL Draft.
