Josh Love threw for two touchdowns and ran for another as San Jose State matched its win total from 2018 by opening its season with a 35-18 victory over visiting Northern Colorado on Thursday night.
Love, in his third season as a starter, was 21-for-31 passing for 224 yards. He threw a 7-yard scoring pass to Jermaine Braddock in the first quarter and a 14-yarder to a leaping Derrick Deese Jr. in the left side of the end zone in the third quarter. Love’s 3-yard dive up the middle gave the Spartans a 21-6 halftime lead.
San Jose State’s DeJon Packer opened the scoring with a 1-yard run.
Collin Root kicked three field goals, his final one cutting San Jose State’s lead to 10 early in the fourth quarter. But Bobby Brown intercepted a Jacob Knipp pass and returned it 14 yards to the Bears’ 13 and Tyler Nevens covered the rest in two carries, with his 8- yard run capping the scoring with 5:21 left in the game.
Cincinnati 24, UCLA 14: Michael Warren II ran for one touchdown and caught one of quarterback Desmond Ridder’s two scoring passes as the host Bearcats downed the Bruins in the season opener for both teams. UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson was 8-for-26 passing for 156 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw two interceptions and lost two fumbles. “I was horrible,” Thompson-Robinson said. “It was very disappointing, not only because we didn’t get the win but looking at these guys’ faces.”
Arizona State 30, Kent State 7: Jayden Daniels, the first true freshman to start a season opener at quarterback in school history, threw for 284 yards and two scores to lead the host Sun Devils past the Golden Flashes. Eno Benjamin added 102 yards rushing for the Sun Devils, who had 455 yards total offense compared with 200 yards for Kent State.
#1 Clemson 52, Georgia Tech 14: Travis Etienne rushed for 205 yards and had three touchdown runs, including a 90-yarder, as the host Tigers beat the Yellow Jackets in the opener for both ACC teams. Etienne’s 90-yard jaunt tied for the longest rushing TD in school history. He added scoring runs of 14 yards and 48 yards as Clemson opened a 35-0 lead en route to its 16th consecutive win.

#12 Texas A&M 41, Texas State 7: Kellen Mond threw three touchdown passes and ran for a score and Isaiah Spiller and Jashaun Corbin each topped 100 yards rushing for the host Aggies, who built a 28-0 halftime lead and cruised past the Bobcats in the opener for both teams. Myles Jones had two of Texas A&M’s four interceptions, and the Aggies had three sacks and nine tackles for losses. The four interceptions were the most Texas A&M has had since 2006.
#17 Central Florida 62, Florida A&M 0: Brandon Wimbush, a transfer from Notre Dame, passed for 168 yards and two touchdowns and freshman quarterback Dillon Gabriel added three scoring throws as the host Golden Knights overwhelmed the Rattlers in the opener for both teams. Central Florida improved to 26-1 since the start of 2017, with the loss coming against LSU in last season’s Fiesta Bowl. That setback ended a school- and American Athletic Conference-record 25-game winning streak.
Briefly: Nebraska head coach Scott Frost said a decision on whether running back Maurice Washington plays in the opener against South Alabama on Saturday might not be made until game time. Washington, a sophomore from Stockton. is facing pornography charges related to an incident when he was in high school. He has has a court hearing scheduled for Tuesday in San Jose. … Florida State’s opener against Boise State on Saturday was moved from Jacksonville, Fla., to Tallahassee, Fla., because of Hurricane Dorian.
