Man, 73 dies in early morning house fire in Oakland

A 73-year-old man died Monday morning in a fire that broke out in an Oakland home, according to the Oakland Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the blaze in a two-story Victorian at 16th and Linden streets at 5:47 a.m.

“There was a large volume of fire coming from second-story window on arrival,” Battalion Chief Sean Laffan said.

Laffan says six people were in the home and the elderly man is the only person who didn’t escape.

“I believe it was a family living in the home,” Laffan said.

The department believes the started in a front bedroom where the man was found dead, but the exact cause is still under investigation.

The name of the 73-year-old man hasn’t been released.
