One case of the measles has been reported on the Google campus in Mountain View, Calif., according to a BuzzFeed report published Wednesday. The County of Santa Clara Public Health Department confirmed the exposure to The San Francisco Chronicle on Wednesday.
An email sent by a Google staff doctor and obtained by BuzzFeed reportedly warned employees last week that a worker who had been in one of the company’s buildings on April 4 had been diagnosed with measles. The office is located at 1295 Charleston Road.
Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The diagnosed Google employee works in Santa Clara County but resides in San Mateo County, according to a statement from the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department sent to The Chronicle. The case is not related to other reported cases of measles in the county and there is no additional risk to the public, it said. At least four measles cases have been reported in Santa Clara County since the start of 2019, including a case where an individual below the age of 18 became infected. At least 21 measles cases have been recorded in California, including one in San Francisco County and two in San Mateo County.
The virus was altogether eradicated from the United States by 2000, but there are approximately 555 cases throughout the country, the CDC reported last week.
The CDC advises unvaccinated children and adults, and those with weakened immune systems, who may have visited a location during a window of measles exposure to watch out for fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and a rash that starts on the face, according to Dr. Sara Cody, Santa Clara County Health Officer. Symptoms begin to appear seven to 21 days following exposure.
