Mets to acquire Marcus Stroman from Blue Jays

The Mets are close to completing a trade to acquire All-Star pitcher Marcus Stroman from the Blue Jays, according to a person familiar with the negotiations.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Sunday because the deal had not been finalized.

New York would send Toronto two of its top pitching prospects, 24-year-old left-hander Anthony Kay and 18-year-old right-hander Simeon Woods Richardson.

Stroman, 28, is 6-11 in 21 starts despite a 2.96 ERA that is fifth best in the American League. He has a $7.4 million salary and is not eligible for free agency until after the 2020 season.

Toronto’s clubhouse was not opened to reporters after Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay, and Stroman left the ballpark without speaking to the media.

The Mets (50-55) are six games back in the NL wild-card race, with six teams ahead for the two spots, after a four-game winning streak that boosted them to 10-5 since the All-Star break.

Kay is 1-3 with a 6.61 ERA in seven starts at Triple-A after starting the season 7-3 with a 1.76 ERA in 12 starts at Double-A. Woods Richardson is 3-8 with a 4.25 ERA in 20 starts in Class A.

• The Rays acquired former A’s infielder Eric Sogard, who is hitting 300 with 10 home runs and 30 RBIs in 73 games, from the Blue Jays for two players to be named later.

“I’m excited, excited to be with a team in contention to make the playoffs,” Sogard said. “I certainly hope I can bring to them what I’ve done here in Toronto and help them make the playoffs.”

Sogard’s departure opened a roster spot in Toronto for infielder Bo Bichette, who reportedly will be promoted from Triple-A Buffalo.

• Cleveland acquired reliever Hunter Wood and former Giants infielder Christian Arroyo from the Rays for Class A outfielder Ruben Cardenas and international signing money.

Injury report: The Yankees put left-hander CC Sabathia on the injured list because of knee inflammation. … The Reds activated left-hander Alex Wood from the IL and catcher Kyle Farmer from the concussion list. … White Sox outfielder Eloy Jimenez was activated from the IL.
