Quakes blank Galaxy in front of 50,850 at Stanford

Valeri “Vako” Qazaishvili scored early and the Earthquakes rolled past he LA Galaxy 3-0 in the California Clasico on Saturday night at Stanford Stadium.

There were 50,850 fans on hand, setting an attendance record for the rivalry.

After Vako’s pass was blocked by a Galaxy player back to him, he sent a low hard shot from outside the area into the left corner of the net in the 11th minute.

Shea Salinas extended San Jose’s lead in the 82nd minute, settling a long pass from Vako and firing the ball inside the left post. Three minutes later, Tommy Thompson’s cross was redirected into the goal by the Galaxy’s Perry Kitchen to cap the scoring.

Daniel Vega preserved his fifth shutout of the season with a diving save to deny Efrain Alvarez in the 89th minute. The Earthquakes (7-6-4) improved their unbeaten streak to five.

Copa America: Peru beat Uruguay 5-4 on penalties after a 0-0 draw in Salvador, Brazil, to advance to the semifinals of the South American championship.

Peru’s next opponent will be defending champion Chile on Wednesday in Porto Alegre. Brazil and Argentina play Tuesday for the other spot in next Sunday’s final at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro.
