• Valentin Castellanos scored in the 36th minute, Sean Johnson got his seventh shutout of the season and New York City FC at home beat the Columbus Crew 1-0. … Romero “Kaku” Gamarra scored in the sixth minute, Daniel Royer got his ninth goal on a penalty kick, and the New York Red Bulls beat D.C. United 2-1 in Washington.
• Lionel Messi is back in full training with Barcelona and may be fit to face Real Betis in the Spanish league on Sunday. Messi had been training separately from the squad since injuring his right calf in the preseason.
Jets’ Copeland suspended: PEDs
New York Jets linebacker Brandon Copeland was suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the regular season for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing substances.
Copeland, who had five sacks in 10 starts last season, can still participate in the team’s preseason practices and games. He is eligible to return to the active roster on Oct. 7.
• The Pac-12 won’t be kicking off football games in the morning this season, but the idea is not off the table.
Pac-12 spokesman Andrew Walker said some schools are interested in playing games that can be slotted into the noon Eastern time window by broadcast partner Fox. That means 9 a.m. kickoffs for the schools in the Pacific time zone and 10 a.m. in the Mountain time zone. Walker said further discussion is needed and the earliest any morning games would be scheduled is 2020
NHL: The Minnesota Wild hired Bill Guerin, 48, as their general manager. Guerin won two Stanley Cups as a player and two more titles in the front office with the Pittsburgh Penguins. … Ottawa Senators forward Colin White, who had 14 goals and 27 assists last season as a rookie, signed a six-year, $28.5 million contract extension.
Tennis: Former Grand Slam champions Goran Ivanisevic, Sergi Bruguera, Conchita Martinez and Jonas Bjorkman are the four candidates for the International Tennis Hall of Fame’s class of 2020
Courts: Danish golfer Thorbjorn Olesen, a member of Europe’s Ryder Cup-winning team in 2018, is to face trial in England after being charged with sexual assault and being drunk on an aircraft.
Olesen, 29, indicated he would plead not guilty to the offenses when he made a brief appearance at a magistrates’ court in Uxbridge, west of London. He was arrested on July 29, and has been suspended by the European Tour pending the outcome of the case.
