Race car driver Tanner Thorson injured in fiery Modesto crash

A well-known sprint car racer was injured in a fiery, four-vehicle crash on northbound Highway 99 in Modesto early Monday morning.

Tanner Thorson, 22, was driving a pickup truck hauling sprint cars when he crashed into a milk truck around 4 a.m. near Hatch Road, the California Highway Patrol said. Two other vehicles were also involved in the crash.

The CHP said Thorson, who is from Carson City, didn’t slow down in time upon entering a construction zone.

Thorson’s car erupted in flames. He suffered broken bones in the crash, but is expected to survive.

A passenger in the milk truck suffered minor injuries.

The CHP said Thorson was drowsy, which may have contributed to the crash.

Thorson’s racing team is based in Sacramento.

No other details have been released.
