Daryl Morey, the analytics-obsessed general manager of the Houston Rockets who strongly believes that the Raiders won the Khalil Mack trade, is back again with another scalding-hot sports take.
This time, it’s about his own team, which has been eliminated from the postseason by the Golden State Warriors in consecutive seasons.
“Vs the Warriors the last 3 years in the playoffs — Houston: 5-8,” Morey tweeted. “Rest of NBA: 5-34.”
The executive then listed the records of other teams who faced Golden State in the past three postseasons, all of which fared worse than Houston.
A number of NBA fans were quick to taunt Morey for seeking a “participation trophy.”
“Toyota Center needs a new banner,” one fan wrote, along with a photo of a fake banner that reads, “Houston Rockets: Pushed the Warriors to 7 games, 2017-2018.”
Someone else created a fake certificate of achievement designed for elementary school students, which congratulated the Rockets for their 5-8 playoff record against Golden State.
Another fan took a brutal shot at the massive contract extension Morey gave Chris Paul last summer.
“Money owed to @CP3 over the next 3 years — Rockets: $124 million, Rest of NBA: $0,” the fan tweeted.
Morey has said in the past that beating the Warriors is the “only thing we think about,” and that many of Houston’s off-season moves are specifically geared toward trying to match up better with Golden State.
“It’s like 90 percent if we’re gonna win a title, we’ve gotta obviously beat the Warriors at some point,” he said in December 2017. “So we’re extremely focused on that. A lot of our signings and what we do during the year is based on that.”
