Rockies’ David Dahl out because of ankle injury

The Rockies placed All-Star outfielder David Dahl on the 10-day injured list with a high right ankle sprain Saturday.

An MRI exam confirmed the injury, which occurred in the sixth inning of a win over the Giants on Friday. Manager Bud Black said Dahl’s absence could be “several weeks.”

Dahl was hurt when he slightly overran a knuckling flyball from Scooter Gennett. He planted his feet to stop and reached back to catch the ball and his right leg buckled under him. He was taken off the field on a cart after being attended to by the training staff.

Dahl is batting .302 with 15 home runs and 61 RBIs.

Encarnacion breaks wrist: Yankees designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion became the 15th player on the team’s injured list after he suffered a broken right wrist when he was hit by a pitch from Red Sox reliever Josh Smith on Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader opener.

Encarnacion had an X-ray, which was negative, but a CT scan revealed the fracture.

Acquired from Seattle on June 15, Encarnacion is hitting .240 with 30 home runs and 76 RBIs this season.

Injury report: All-Star catcher Willson Contreras of the Cubs will undergo an MRI exam Monday after he hurt his right hamstring Saturday while running out a flyball during a game against the Brewers. … Players landing on the IL included Twins center fielder Byron Buxton (shoulder) and pitcher Michael Pineda (right triceps strain), Cardinals outfielder Tyler O’Neill (wrist), White Sox pitcher Carson Fulmer (hamstring) and Blue Jays pitcher Nick Kingham (oblique). … Players activated from the IL included Cardinals outfielder Marcell Ozuna, Twins first baseman C.J. Cron and Red Sox pitcher Brian Johnson.

Phanatic suit: The Philadelphia Phillies have sued the New York company that created the Phanatic mascot to prevent the green furry fan favorite from becoming a free agent.

In a complaint filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, the team alleged Harrison/Erickson threatened to terminate the Phillies’ rights to the Phanatic next year and “make the Phanatic a free agent” unless the team renegotiated its 1984 agreement to acquire the mascot’s rights.

Briefly: Reliever Brad Brach was designated for assignment by the Cubs. … Pirates reliever Richard Rodriguez was placed on the paternity list.
