Sales tax is going up in dozens of California cities: See the full list here

Residents of 51 California cities are seeing new sales tax rates on their receipts today as new rules kicked in on April 1.

The new rates apply to cities in Alameda, Contra Costa and Sonoma counties in the Bay Area. The county of Sonoma has a new countywide rate increase, affecting Cotati, Healdsburg, Rohnert Park, Sebastopol, Sonoma and Santa Rosa.

The minimum sales tax in the state of California is 7.25 percent. Most of these increases are from 0.5 to 1 percent.

In addition, California now requires out-of-state retailers, like those selling goods on Amazon, to also collect sales tax. Lawmakers hope this move will level the playing field for brick-and-mortar businesses who have lost sales to online retailers.
