In the aftermath of Kevin Durant’s quick decision to sign with the Brooklyn Nets, there were a lot of rumors about how his former Warriors teammates learned the news.
One persistent rumor is that Stephen Curry was on the plane back from his Under Armour Asia tour, ready to pitch KD on staying with the Warriors, when he got the news. And although he didn’t deny the timing, he did recently add some context around the “pitch meeting” that never happened.
Curry told The Athletic’s Marcus Thompson II that the visit wasn’t about asking Durant to stay — it was about closing the loop on their work relationship.
“There was no need to pitch. He knows what we’re about and what we accomplished. He just had to make a decision that makes him happy,” Curry said. “That’s what everybody wants to do in this league. It was more about a respect factor, not letting the BS of this league get in the way of our relationship, and not let it change who I am or anything like that. I feel like he just knew what he wanted.
“And at the end of the day, that’s all you can ask for as a player.”
For his part, Durant has been mum on his motivations except for a few leaked reports. Last week, Nets general manager Sean Marks said at press conference even he didn’t know that Durant was signing with his team until it was announced on Instagram.
“Well yeah, the Instagram post that he put out, we were all sitting in the office, and we all got that in real time with you guys,” Marks said. “We weren’t even sure if we were getting a meeting that night or if it was going to be a telephone conversation with him.
“That was the first.”
