Trump congratulates Nick Bosa, tells him to ‘stay true’ to himself

President Donald Trump took to Twitter Saturday morning to congratulate Nick Bosa on being drafted second overall by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2019 NFL Draft, and told the pass rusher to “stay true” to himself.

“Congratulations to Nick Bosa on being picked number two in the NFL Draft,” the president tweeted. “You will be a great player for years to come, maybe one of the best. Big Talent! San Francisco will embrace you but most importantly, always stay true to yourself. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Bosa was a supporter of Trump’s during the 2016 presidential election, and once said in an interview that he was a “big fan” of then-candidate Trump.

“Yes, big fan,” Bosa said at the time. “He brings a charisma that no other candidate has [had] in my lifetime.”

The Ohio State product continued his support of the president through various likes and retweets on Twitter, until he deleted political content before the draft.

A number of left-leaning 49ers fans were not pleased with the selection, and Bosa apologized for past tweets in which he called Colin Kaepernick a “clown,” Beyonce’s music “complete trash,” and Black Panther the “worst Marvel movie.”

“I definitely made some insensitive decisions throughout my life and I’m just excited to be here with a clean slate,” Bosa said during his introductory press conference Friday. “I’m sorry if I hurt anybody, I definitely didn’t intend for that to be the case but I think me being here is even better for me as a person, because I don’t think there’s any city that would help you grow as much as this one will.”

Bosa also said he now “respects” what Colin Kaepernick did.

“I respect what he’s done, if it empowers anybody then he’s doing a good thing,” he said. “So yeah, I apologize for that.”
