Two killed in separate vehicle crashes Saturday morning

Two separate vehicle crashes in the Bay Area early Saturday morning proved fatal.

One person was killed and five others injured in a collision involving two vehicles on State Route 17 early Saturday morning, the Santa Clara County Fire Department said.

Fire crews responded just after 2:11 a.m. to the crash at southbound SR 17 just south of Redwood Estates. Both vehicles were found with major damage and facing northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway, according to a fire department news release.

Crews extracted two trapped individuals, one of whom was dead. The other was taken to a trauma center, along with four others who had sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

The fatal victim has not yet been identified by the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office.

A second fatal collision was reported by the California Highway Patrol at 2 a.m. Saturday when a vehicle collided with a utility pole on State Route 4 near the Willow Avenue off ramp in Hercules.

A silver Ford Taurus caught fire, according to the CHP.

No other information was immediately available.
