Eric Ruiz is both a Golden State Warriors fan and a Drake fan, but wanted to find a way to get back at the rapper after witnessing his prolific Warriors trolling during the 2019 NBA Finals.
“The idea started last weekend after reading another story of Drake trolling the Warriors,” Ruiz told SFGate in an email. “Actually, I thought him wearing a Dell Curry jersey was pretty funny. Then I read a piece that said Dray and Drake had dinner. Draymond said something to the effect of Drake’s antics aka s—talking is all a part of the game.”
Ruiz then came up with the idea to put up a billboard in Toronto with lyrics from Drake’s 2011 hit “The Motto” about the Bay Area.
In the song, Drake pays tribute to deceased Oakland rapper Mac Dre with the line, “Rest in peace, Mac Dre, imma do it for the Bay.”
Ruiz, who works in marketing for Netflix, collaborated with a former coworker on a billboard that displays the lyrics and circles the words “the Bay”and “Drake.”
According to Ruiz, they originally intended to put it up at Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square, but the vendor they were working with thought the screens they were trying to purchase were too close to ground level and could be easily vandalized.
They found a new vendor through a mutual friend, and were able to place the billboard closer to the part of Toronto where Drake grew up.
“At the end of the day, most people who have reacted to it on the internet get the joke,” Ruiz said. “It’s all in banter and all in good fun. No matter what happens, I’m still going to listen to Drake’s ‘Take Care’ after the Finals.”
This is also a little payback on behalf of Warriors fans who were greeted by a Kawhi Leonard New Balance billboard outside Oracle Arena before Games 3 and 4 of the NBA Finals.
