Alen Smailagic spent the 2018-19 season with the G League’s Santa Cruz Warriors, and says he learned a new English word from former Warriors center DeMarcus Cousins while the former All-Star was there for a rehab assignment.
In a recent profile from The Athletic, the 18-year-old Smailagic — a Serbian-born player who was drafted with the 39th pick in the 2019 NBA Draft — recounted what it was like trash talking with Boogie Cousins, who signed with the Los Angeles Lakers earlier this off-season.
According to The Athletic’s Ethan Strauss, Smailagic is “still learning new terms” in English, and did not understand the insult Cousins hurled at him.
“Don’t play with us, you’re probably a virgin!” Cousins reportedly told the young Smailagic.
“Smailagic would shoot back, ‘I’ll show you,’ perhaps not completely understanding the context of the insult,” Strauss writes.
The rookie power forward also had some fun quotes about playing defense and his new favorite American chain restaurant, Chili’s.
“I really don’t like to play defense,” he told Strauss. “But in G League, if you want to go the NBA, you have to play it.”
That seems accurate.
“I like strawberry lemonade, queso and soup,” he said of Chili’s. “That is all.”
Smailagic was the youngest player ever to play in the NBA’s G League, and was originally drafted by the New Orleans Pelicans. He was then traded to the Warriors for two future second-round picks and cash considerations
