What to do if your AirPods fall on the BART tracks? Here’s what one woman did

A woman caused a stir on social media Wednesday by sharing her genius idea for rescuing one of her AirPods that had fallen onto the BART tracks.

Twitter user Ashley Mayer covered the tip of a broom handle with duct tape, sticky side facing out, and picked the $150-plus Apple product up from the track area.

“He’s filthy but he’s mine (again)!” she wrote.

In a subsequent tweet, Mayer shared an image of her prized AirPods in her ears and wrote, “I dedicate this selfie to the germaphobes.”

BART spotted the initial post, which has now received more than 7,000 likes and retweeted it, along with the public service announcement: “Amazing MacGyver moves in this thread, but if your AirPod drops into BART tracks, let a station agent know (or us on Twitter) Station agents either have grabber tools which they can try to retrieve from the platform, or will work with staff to safely retrieve it.”

BART spokesperson Chris Filippi says lost AirPods are common; in 2018, the transit agency’s lost and found department received reports of 80 lost pairs.

“What we don’t track is how often a station agent is told a rider has dropped AirPods into the trackway and the station agent is able to retrieve them,” Filippi says.

Filippi also reiterated BART’s message: “We encourage people to contact a station agent if their AirPods fall on the tracks. It is never safe for a rider to go down into the trackway themselves to retrieve AirPods or any other dropped item.”

But waiting around for this to happen could be impractical for some. Mayer says she contacted a station agent about the situation, but when she learned it was going to take two hours to save her pod — and she needed to be present — she took the matter into her own hands.

“Don’t worry I won’t jump down there,” she assured her more than 28,000 Twitter followers.
