A 56-year-old Cupertino woman died Sunday after she was hit by falling rock and ice on a closed trail in Yosemite National Park, according to park officials.
Xuan Wang was hiking on the Mist Trail when she was hit, park officials said in statement. She died shortly after being struck.
The trail Wang was exploring is closed during the winter time due to icy and hazardous conditions, park officials stated.
“The trail closure is clearly marked and there is a gate on the trail reminding visitors of the closure,” park officials said in the statement. “Wang ignored the signs, went around the gate and the incident happened on the trail leading to Vernal Fall.”
Wang’s death remains under investigation.
